Family Services integrates, educates, and empowers youth and their families with vital skills and knowledge to achieve positive growth and development, improve their quality of life and build stronger and more resilient families. This includes a youth and adult focus. Our youth focus includes after-school programming and summer programming that encourages youth to grow emotionally, socially, and academically.
YFC's After School Program follows the McHenry D15 and D156 calendars. Our program is closed on non-school days or when school is canceled.
Program Hours:
Elementary School Hours
Monday to Thursday 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Middle School and High School Hours
Monday to Friday 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Providing prevention support to youth throughout the summer. Summer program is especially crucial for underserved youth, because during the summer months they do not have access to any of the support and resources that the school provides. YFC partners with other agencies often in the summer to provide opportunities for community integration.
Early June - Early August
Summer Registration begins May 1

Our program provides a supportive academic environment after school, promoting enrichment and skill-building in subjects like math, science, reading, and writing. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, students receive extra support to reinforce classroom learning and improve performance. The curriculum also emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and a growth mindset, aiming to boost academic achievement, confidence, and prepare students for future challenges. Additionally, the program incorporates social-emotional learning, helping students develop interpersonal skills and resilience for success in and out of the classroom.
Our program prioritizes emotional well-being, fostering emotional intelligence and resilience in a safe environment. Each space includes a "calm corner" for processing emotions and self-regulation. Activities help students recognize and express their feelings, develop empathy, and build healthy relationships. To strengthen the emotional growth of the youth, our program has specific days dedicated to emotional skills. Once a week, YFC’s Social Worker spends an hour in each program space and holds workshops where youth learn about their feelings, and are taught coping skills. Each space has a personalized workshop where the needs of each age group are taken into consideration.
Our program provides a safe space for students to grow socially, teaching essential life skills like teamwork, communication, and empathy. We emphasize community, helping students navigate social dynamics, resolve conflicts, and make informed decisions. The program encourages community involvement, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility while reducing risky behaviors. YFC also hosts the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, recruits community mentors, and partners with organizations like Goldfish Swim School, Free Guitars for Future Stars, McHenry County Conservation District, and many more to support youth engagement.
Individualized care plan created for youth identified to require more 1 on 1 support to address social-emotional concerns in addition to our prevention program
YFC provides after-school and summer programs where youth are empowered to grow emotionally, socially and academically. YFC’s unique, multifaceted approach is based on the understanding that all children can grow and build resilience once their individual strengths are maximized and their needs are met.
The children that the Youth and Family Center of McHenry County’s (YFC) Youth Program serves are at-risk to experience significant challenges emotionally, socially and academically due to the following risk factors. All of the 210 children in the program last year qualified for free or reduced school lunch. Less than 1% of the children’s parents finished high school, and 28% only attended elementary school. Furthermore, 41% of the children have experienced one or more adverse childhood experience, including loss of a parent, physical or sexual abuse, domestic abuse, or homelessness, and half of the middle school youth have experienced 3 or more adverse childhood experiences. Of the children that have experienced a traumatic event, physical abuse was reported by parents to have occurred in the homes of 28% of the children. Finally, when the YFC youth´s parents were most recently surveyed about what concerns they had regarding their child, 56% expressed concerns about their child’s social and emotional well-being, and 35% expressed concerns about their child’s academic progress.
These families experience many barriers that prevent them from accessing and navigating services to mitigate the detrimental effects of their family or life circumstances on their mental and physical health. Many of YFC’s clients are referred by other organizations for any number of reasons, including when a family has experienced the loss of a family member or when a child shows signs of mental illness. A unique, multifaceted service delivery model is used to help youth grow academically, socially, and emotionally that focuses on the child and family’s strengths and facilitates collaboration between the parents, children, YFC staff and other community organizations. Furthermore, YFC is the only youth program in McHenry that is offered year-round to all school age children and the only program that does not charge registration or transportation fees.
Our Youth Prevention Program goals and outcome measurements are: “increase knowledge and resiliency” and “increase social connectedness”.
